The long anticipated release by Nikki Sixx and his Sixx A.M project finally hits the streets and Maximum Threshold was able to get its hands on it and put together a little review to give you something to work off of.
The opening track “This Is Gonna Hurt” is fueled by its extremely strong melodic drive and powerful chorus. I think it has one of the strongest lyrics on this release. “Lies of the Beautiful People” is the opening single off this release and this one proves to deliver the vibe of the entire release. Very creative melodic lines are placed throughout this track. “Are You With Me Now” does not seem to be a very biting track at first but the strong chorus keeps this one fired up. This one sounds like it would be placed in a soundtrack. “Live Forever” is a forceful track with pounding guitars and drums. The chorus is very catchy and sounds of Sixx A.M. can be heard in this track. A nice vibe and really strong lyrics make this another catchy tune. A proven single “Sure Feels Right” is a smooth opening track to open this release. Catchy hooks and soft melody. Should be a tune picked up on mainstream radio at some point. “Deadlihood” has the pounding vibe that is evident throughout this release and keeps this song in the mix. The chorus is very catchy and keeps this song alive. Not one of the strongest tracks but the chorus saves it. DJ Ashba provides a nice ripping solo to this one also.
The track that I found myself listening to over and over is “Smile” this is slow melodic song and could easily be sang by Christina Aguilera and thrown in her mix. But with this being Sixx A.M. we have to deal with it. And with that said, lets just say that song provides a lot of emotion, and great vocals. I recommend if you are looking for something to give you some relaxation than tune in to this track a few times. It works! “Help Is On The Way” is a nice fast paced song and is very creative. Nice hook and the melody keeps the song moving and the “doot doot doot doot” also keeps it upbeat. “Oh My God” has nice lyrics and is very touching. I keep hearing a U2 song in this melody (Streets has no names). Not that U2 is a bad comparison but you get the vibe of it being a strong melodic and the vocals are top notch. “Goodbye My Friends” starts off with a nice piano piece and then quickly builds up tempo. I am trying to figure out how this songs actually fits in to the mix with the style. Sounds like it could be a part of a rock opera. Not bad but just threw me off. And yes that may just be a good thing! “Skin” seems to take off right after the last track with the piano intro. I listened to this a few times and really started to feel the vibe they were going through with this one. Very deep lyrics and extremely melodic.
Overview: Compared to the last Sixx A.M. I feel that this is a nice companion to the following one. “This Is Gonna Hurt” pulls out all the punches and gives you something from the heart. You can tell there was a lot of time devoted to this release by the strong melody lines in each of the songs. Only a couple sounded like that didn’t really belong on this one but as an overall vibe they fit in. Due to the emotion of the CD. I recommend you picking up a copy of this one and listen to it a few times and let it sink in and feel what they were going for. Once you let that happen and make the connection this release will be spinning in your head for months to come!
